About Me
My name is Beth and it’s no secret that I’m a addicted to vegetable gardening. Friends have remarked that I play the sport of extreme gardening, the X-games of gardening some say. I admit, I am a little obsessed.
In the winter of 2008 I decided that I never wanted to mow the lawn again, and that the space in the front yard was being wasted. It was a pathetic collection of weeds that barely succeeded in looking lawn-like but never looked good.
I decided it was time for a change. I dug out the weeds and planted a landscape that would nourish my family; a space we could enjoy, and that would be useful as well as beautiful. The rules for the garden are simple: First, we only plant things that we like to eat, or that help the bees who pollinate. Second, the garden is maintained organically.
With about a full year of full frontal vegetable gardening behind us I can say with total confidence that this is a success! We do occasionally try to grow something that ends up being a supreme failure but for the most part things grow- and then we eat them. This is right for our family, and I want to share our successes and learning experiences with others who might want to give it a go.
We have harvested more food than we could possibly use, we now actually spend time in the front yard, and we have met more of our neighbors than ever before. We have made friends and memories, and we learn something new everyday because of the work we do in the garden.
We have harvested so much more than vegetables from this garden, and for that we are truly thankful.
